Director and Baroque Recorder
Jean Hein is a founding member of Columbia Baroque. Hein serves on the Board of Directors of Early Music America, the national early music arts advocacy organization. She has been executive director of the Sandlapper Singers, Arts @ St. Luke’s in Oklahoma City and the Fox Valley Children’s Choir in Illinois. Hein has toured Ireland and Wales performing Baroque and Celtic music and presented recorder recitals in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeast US.
Hein has extensive experience as a clarinetist. She currently teaches for the Palmetto Center for the Arts and maintains a large clarinet studio in Columbia, SC. She performs on clarinet and recorder with local orchestral and chamber music groups. She has been a clarinetist in orchestras and chamber ensembles in Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Hein has served on the faculty of Claflin University, Cornell College, Coe College and Columbia College. She holds music degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory and Northwestern University, with further study at the University of Iowa and summer study at Oberlin’s Baroque Performance Institute and Indiana University.
